Granger Austrian winter peas

Spring 2002

The Breeders Granger Austrian winter pea seed planted was obtained from the Washington State Crop Improvement Association.  This crop was viewed as a good first crop to grow for organic production.  The leguminous crop would help fix nitrogen, build soil organic matter, and provide stability for a newly leveled field.  12 acres were planted to certified organic foundation seed.  The rest of the peas planted would be used as a cover crop or harvested for organic common seed.  The crop did pretty well in the climate of the Fall River Valley.  River Ranch is planning to continue production in the next few years.
