Organic UC-27 Garbanzo Bean
|
The UC-27 garbanzo bean seed was donated from the California Crop Improvement Association as a research gift for a Cal Poly senior project by James Rickert. The experiment was to determine if this crop can produce mature seed as a summer crop. Due to the major irrigation setbacks, the stand was not established at the optimum time. The crop did quite well once the irrigation problems were fixed. The field was essentially weed free and the crop was nearly mature at the end of the growing season. The crop was harvested fresh and was the reward to employees of River Ranch for their first endeavor with organic production. River Ranch will continue to pursue garbanzo cultivation in the future. Another variety, Evans, will be evaluated next year. Evans is a shorter season crop. UC-27 will be planted next year as well for comparative analysis. |
